Let Curiosity Lead You: A Visit to Idlewild Butterfly Farm in Louisville

Do you ever feel pulled toward something?
Going right instead of left. Taking the long way, just because.

I’m learning to lean into those little nudges. Those downloads don't necessarily make any sense but you can feel the buzz of yes in your body. They are more helpful than we’ll ever know, but we’re taught that they don’t mean anything. I believe that there is more wisdom beyond our understanding that lies within our bodies than we will ever have the time to unearth.

That’s how I ended up at Idlewild Butterfly Farm, tucked away in a quiet pocket of Louisville, Kentucky. I’d seen it a few times, assuming it was a community garden. But this time, before I walked back to my car from Logan Street Market, I walked in. And followed my curiosity—because good things tend to happen when I do.

And of course, the instincts delivered.

Idlewild feels like a portal. It celebrates the quiet magic of metamorphosis. Specializing in native pollinators like the iconic Monarch butterfly, this little wonderland is also home to exotic insects, seasonal exhibits, and a deeply passionate team of entomologists and “bug-tenders” who treat every creature with care. Whether you’re a tourist, a gardener, or someone just trying to feel something again, this space reminds you that small things can still be sacred.

I was greeted by one of the kindest humans I’ve encountered in a while. The official tour guides had already left for the day, but she graciously showed me around. I got to witness butterflies in every stage—from eggs to chrysalis to full-on flying art. And the cocoons? I damn near cried. There is this little gold line that goes through the top. FREAKING GOLD. And I just thought how nature is such a poetic girly, something built to essentially break you down is still so beautifully made.

It reminded me that even when you're going through it—grief, burnout, heartbreak—you can still go on a beautiful walk. Still grab a beautiful latte. Still choose beauty, even as you unravel. Even in ally the ugly parts, there is ALWAYS something beautiful.

Outside, she walked me past the native plants they sell for home gardens (10/10 recommend), and then into a netted greenhouse where the adult butterflies live, flirt, and mate. Basically a very exclusive singles mixer with flower service.

The whole scene felt cinematic. Giving 10/10 Main Character Moment. Butterflies floating in soft motion like slow confetti. One found me and stayed close the entire time I was inside. It’s hard to pinpoint the feeling that this conjured up for me- it struck a chord of childlike wonder that I haven’t felt in a while.

This stop wasn’t on my to-do list, but I’m so glad I made room for the detour. Awe isn’t scheduled. Wonder doesn’t live on a calendar invite. Routine kills the opportunity for magic—but magic is always available to those willing to look up, look around, and say yes to what they feel.

If you need help shaking up your schedule or inviting more beauty into your everyday, I’d love to help you design your own Main Character Moment. Let curiosity lead you somewhere unexpected. Let awe find you again.
